Polymers of compounds of formula H2C=CHR, where R is hydrogen, chlorine or an alkyl or aryl group, are chlorinated in aqueous suspension in the presence of visible light and/or ultraviolet radiation by means of chlorine gas which has been wholly or partially saturated with the vapour of a swelling agent for the polymer. Specified polymers are polyvinyl chloride, particularly tactic polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene and polyethylene. Specified swelling agents are chlorinated or perchlorinated C1- 3 hydrocarbons. The aqueous medium may contain hydrogen chloride, and the chlorine may be diluted with nitrogen, carbon dioxide or hydrogen chloride. The chlorine may be charged with the swelling agent by bubbling through a saturator containing the swelling agent and maintained at 10 DEG to 55 DEG C. depending on the degree of saturation desired. Examples describe the chlorination of (1-5) polyvinyl chloride, (10) polystyrene and (11 and 12) polyethylene with chlorine charged with chloroform; and of polyvinyl chloride with chlorine charged with (6) chloroform and then carbon tetrachloride and (7) a mixture of chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. |
