PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low-viscosity liquid crystal compound suitable for a liquid crystal display element, excellent in negative anisotropic value of dielectric constant, optical anisotropy, voltage retention, stability and compatibility, containing a specific structure in a skeleton structure. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal compound containing a structure of formula I [G is a 1-6C alkylene, O, S, Se, a (1-10 alkyl-substituted)imino, etc.] such as a 3,4,5,6-tetrafluoro-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene-2,7-diyl group in a skeleton structure is shown by formula II [R<1> and Y<1> are each a 1-20C alkyl, H, a halogen, cyano, etc.; X<1> to X<4> are each a signal bond, (CH2 )2 , CH=CH, C≡C, COO, etc.; rings A<1> to A<5> are each a group of formula I, trans-cyclohexane-1,4-diyl, 1,4-phenylene, etc.; a<1> to a<5> are each 0 or 1; a<1> +a<2> +a<3> +a<4> +a<5> >=1].
