An Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network is disclosed for interconnecting a plurality of Emulated Local Area Networks (ELANs). Data packets for transmission over the ATM network are carried on virtual channels. The destination address and priority of each data packet is used to access a look-up table 14 and associated pointer tables 151,152 in order to determine the appropriate virtual channel number for the transmission. |
