PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup element by which smear is suppressed while enabling the optimum S/N design of a read amplifier. SOLUTION: This solid-state image pickup element having a pixel array where pixels each consisting of a photo diode 1 and a vertical switch 4 are arranged in 2-dimension and a vertical scanning circuit 2 that selects respectively any of vertical gate lines 3 and any of vertical signal lines 8 to read a signal from the pixel array and a horizontal scanning circuit 5, is provided with a current storage circuit 12 consisting of a P-channel MOS TR 13 whose drain connects to the vertical signal line 8, whose source connects to a power supply VDD, and whose gate-source is connected to a capacitor 14 and of a switching MOS TR 15 that is connected between the gate and the drain of the P-channel MOS TR 13 and whose gate receives a control signalΦRM. An undesired current produced on the vertical signal line and being a cause to smear is subtracted by the current storage circuit 12 and then the smear component is suppressed before being converted into a voltage signal by a read amplifier.
