PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a luminescent material which emits light in various colors, exhibits a long afterglow and a high luminance, and can be produced safely with a simple production apparatus and to provide a process for producing the same. SOLUTION: This material is a baked body represented by the formula: (M0.9995 -0.998 Eu0.0005 -0.002 )Al2 O4 .(Sr0.9995 -0.998 Eu0.0005 -0.002 )O.n(Al1-a-b Bb Qa )2 O3 (wherein M is Sr, Ca, Mg, or Ba; Q is a rare earth element; a is 0.0005-0.002; b is 0.001-0.35; and n is 1-8) and is produced by a process wherein SrCO3 ,α-Al2 O3 ,γ-Al2 O3 , a boron compd., Eu2 O3 , and Dy2 O3 are slowly heated from 400 deg.C to a temp. in the range of 1,250-1,600 deg.C in 7-10hr in the presence of a carbonaceous material, then baked at 1,250-1,600 deg.C for 3-5hr, cooled to 200 deg.C in 7-10hr, ground, and classified.
