PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve all of contrast, transmittance and sharpness characteristics and to improve the display quality by giving chirality to a liquid crystal material so that the liquid crystal has a twisted structure when voltage is applied, and orienting the liquid crystal in the parallel direction to the substrate. SOLUTION: A nematic liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy with addition of a chiral agent is injected between a pair of substrates 1, 2 of a perpendicular orientation-type ECB mode liquid crystal display element. The surfaces of the substrates 1, 2 in contact with the liquid crystal are subjected to intensive orientation treatment in the parallel direction to the substrate surface. When no voltage is applied, all liquid crystal molecules 10 are oriented almost perpendicular to the substrate. however, the liquid crystal molecules 10 on the interface have a pretilt angle due to the orientation treatment in the parallel direction to the substrate. When voltage is applied on the cell, the liquid crystal molecules 10 are tilted to give large retardation to transmit light. In this process, the liquid crystal molecules show a twisted structure between substrates due to the chiral agent. |
