PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for modifying metallic silicon or a silicon compound to obtain metallic silicon or a silicon compound modified by the above method that shows a color and physical properties different from the inherent ones. SOLUTION: This method negatively ionizes industrial-grade metallic silicon (purity: 98% or higher) by keeping it in a negatively ionized, quartz crucible at >=600 deg.C for a given time (5 to 10min), and then heats the ionized silicon in an oxygen-containing atmosphere by an electric oven for a given time. When fired at 1400 deg.C, common metallic silicon is only molten without changing in color, whereas the metallic silicon modified by the above method shows a color and physical properties different from those of common metallic silicon.
