PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily product the subject compound useful as a component of a bathing agent and cosmetics, etc., in a high yield, by reacting a microorganism having asymmetric reduction ability with 2-acylbenzoic acids and carrying out the intramolecular esterification of the obtained product. SOLUTION: A microorganism having asymmetric reduction ability [e.g. Geotrichum Candidum IFO4597] is reacted with 2-acylbenzoic acids of formula I (R<1> is a linear or branched alkyl group or a alkenyl group; R<2> is H, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an aryl group), and the intramolecular esterification of the obtained product is carried out to readily provide the objective optically active 3-substituted phthalides of formula II [(*) represents the position of the configuration being S or R] useful as a component, etc., for a bathing agent and cosmetics in a high yield. |
