PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten processing time and to hardly receive the effect of density fluctuations of input images by using the number of pixels of a comparison object image and a reference image, the density and average density of the respective pixels of the comparison object image and the density and average density of the respective pixels of the reference image and judging a matching degree based on the calculated result of a specified expression. SOLUTION: When pattern matching start is instructed from an I/O 10, input image data are fetched from a CCD 2 and transferred to a frame memory 6. Then, pattern matching is successively performed from the region of the same shape and same size as the reference image at an upper left within the search range of the input images of the frame memory 6. In this case, when the number of pixels of the comparison object image and the reference image is defined as (n), the density of the respective pixels of the comparison object image is defined as gi (i=1-n), the average density is defined as gr , the density of the respective pixels of the reference image is defined as fi (i=1-n) and the average density is defined as fr , the matching degree is judged based on the calculated result ofΣ|(gi -gr )-(fi -fr )|practically.
