A spanner comprising an open end (18) defined by front (20) and rear (22) jaws, defined with reference to the turning direction, said jaws being linked by an intermediate arcuate web (24). Each jaw comprises an engagement surface (30, 36) for engaging the front half of a front surface (32) and a rear surface (38), respectively, on the head of the part to be turned. A projection (42) is provided on the web for engaging a bearing point (43) on the intermediate head surface (44) immediately ahead of said rear surface (38) when no torque is applied and over the full range of applied torques. The bearing point (43) is located in the front half of said intermediate surface (44). The whole of the intermediate web (24) is spaced apart from the head (28), except at said bearing point (43), when torque is applied and when no torque is applied.
