The piston being measured (10) is placed upside down on a block (20) whose upper surface (21) is checked plane by interference methods. The block (20) is translatable and rotatable with respect to a vertical axis (Z) and includes suction (25) to secure the piston 10). After initial alignment of the piston (10) on the block (20,21) a standard cylinder (30) continuously checked by ring calibrators (51a-b) is passed through the piston crankshaft drillings and supported at either end (31,33). Double capacitative sensors supported at the end of an arm (80) are introduced into the drillings and check their height from the piston top, profile including grease channels and coincidence of axes. The arm actuators (80,81) may be piezoelectric. Additional independently mounted capacitative sensors measure the piston diameters at numerous locations.
