SAFETY VENT FOR RAILROAD TANK CARS

A safety vent (10) for a railroad tank car has a housing (12) mounted about an opening on the top of the car. The housing body defines a cavity which contains a surge protector (16) and a rupture disk (18). The rupture disk (18) is designed to open at a know pressure and allow controlled venting of the pressure in the car. A securement cap (20) threaded into the cavity centers the rupture disk (18) in a seat formed in the surge protector (16). Removal of the securement cap (20) provides quick, easy access to the rupture disk (18) and surge protector (16) for inspection and replacement without removing the housing body.
