In a turret web winding machine (Fig. 1a), cut-off and transfer apparatus comprises a web guide 54, 55, which in an operative position, Fig. 4, defines a pathway 91 partly around a core 67, a cutter 35 for severing the running web 70 near one end of the guide, and air blast means 34 for guiding the leading end of the severed web into the pathway 91 and on to the core 67. Fig. 6 shows the position of the apparatus after the leading end of the severed web has been partly wound on to a new core 67, but is also the position of the apparatus prior to cut-off and transfer. Two arcuate guide plates 54 and 55 are hinged together to form the web guide, and are mounted between a pair of pivoted arms 46. The plates 54 and 55 subtend angles of 180 and 90 degrees respectively. The sawtooth cutter 35 and the air blast means 34 which comprises a conduit provided with rows of perforations (73, 74, Figs. 7a and 7b), are mounted on a pair of arms 32 pivotally mounted on stub shafts between a pair of pivoted arms 18. The arms 18 carry a roller 28 having a resilient surface 29 for pressing the running web 70 against the core 67, and a further roller 27 for deflecting the web path closely past the transverse edge 110 of the plate 54. In operation, the arms 46 are pivoted from the position shown in (Fig. 1b or Fig. 6 to the position shown in (Fig. 3) by pneumatic cylinder 51. Thereafter, plate 55 is pivoted by pneumatic cylinder 59 to the position shown in Fig. 4. At the same time, pneumatic cylinder 24 pivots arms 18 in an anti-clockwise direction bringing the pressure roller 28 into contact with the moving web 70 and core 67. This is followed by a pair of pneumatic cylinders 36 pivoting the arms 32 in an anticlockwise direction, so that the cutter 35 severs the web and the air blast means 34 blows the leading end of the severed web into the pathway 91. After a short delay, a reverse sequence of the above-described operations takes place. Additional air blast means 127 may be provided at the entry end of the web guide plate 54, Fig. 6. Loss of air transversely from the web-guide is partly prevented by annular seals (94 to 97, Fig. 2). Operation of the apparatus may be controlled automatically by sensing means responsive to the diameter of the roll being wound, or detecting a few meters upstream of the apparatus the arrival of a splice in the web, which is an appropriate place for cut-off and transfer. The sequence of operations of the apparatus is controlled by micro-switches (not illustrated) mounted on the apparatus and detecting the completion of movement of the various pivoted arms.</p>
