An improved process for manufacturing a detecting unit for an electrolytic cell with rhodium electrodes. In the first step of the process, rhodium electrodes are prepared from relatively impure rhodium metal by (a) vacuum melting the rhodium metal, (b) cold drawing the rhodium metal into rhodium electrodes, and (c) cleaning the rhodium electrodes. Then, the rhodium electrodes are sealed and embedded in the glass tube of the detecting unit. The detecting unit having the embedded rhodium electrodes is cleaned with a hot acid solution. Finally, the detecting unit is placed in the electrolytic cell. The electrolytic cell manufactured according to the process permits rhodium electrodes to be used to measure water in a sample gas comprising oxygen, hydrogen, or an inert gas; therefore, one electrode material is suitable for all applications. It is no longer necessary to provide different cells depending upon the application (sample gas containing oxygen or hydrogen or an inert gas) of interest.
