A process for controlling the mixture in an internal combustion engine has the following steps: (a) at least one value linked to the air volume that reaches a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine is measured (so-called input value); (b) at least one output value which controls the amount of fuel to be supplied is determined depending at least on the input value(s) measured under (a), by means of stored representation information; (c) the amount of fuel is supplied according to the output value under (b); (d) a value which gives information on the thus obtained mixture is measured (so-called real value); (e) a deviation between the real value measured under (d) and a nominal value is determined; (f) the stored representation information is altered depending on the deviation determined under (e) for the state of operation measured under (a), so that when steps (a) to (e) are carried out in the future in the same state of operation, the deviation is reduced. This is implemented by a learning process. Also disclosed is a device for carrying out this process.
