<p>An energy absorbing seat belt retractor has a frame (22), a locking mechanism (56, 60, 60a) to initially stop a spool (30) from rotating in a belt protraction direction, the spool (30) rotationally supported relative to the frame, a seat belt (36) wound about the spool, and a biasing spring (80) to retract the seat belt. An energy absorbing mechanism permits the spool (30) to rotate in the belt protraction direction subsequent to being locked and includes a formed wire member (46, 46') which is pulled through a tortuous path (44, 48) and in so doing generates a reaction force to control the manner in which the spool rotates.</p> |
