Open load diagnosis method for smart switch

The method involves detecting an open load condition and/or a load interruption of a smart switch (1) at whose output (3) a load (RL) is connected, through evaluating the load status derived by its load driver output when switching the smart switch off. A load detection is activated for a predetermined time after switching the smart switch off. The load detection is alternatively or in addition activated for a predetermined time before switching the smart switch on. The smart switch may be a multiple switch, consisting of several individual smart switches, whereby the load detection is activated for each smart switch individually after the switching off and/or before the switching on. The predetermined period is preferably 200 mu s.
