Apparatus for feeding tubes in lathes comprises a rotary rod 7 which is inserted in the tube 4, the rod having a head 33 including three equally spaced radially movable studs 34 for gripping the tube. In a lathe 1, Fig. 1, rod 7 extends between slides 5, 6 suspended from a guide rail 8, the slides being moved so as to feed the tube 4 through a hollow chuck 3, by a chain drive 9-12. Slide 5, Fig. 3, comprises a frusto-conical sleeve 14 for centering the tube 4 and the slides are releasably connected by a bar 15. When only a remnant of tube remains, a new workpiece (22), Fig. 4 (not shown), is rolled into troughs (24) by separators (23), the troughs being carried by lever (25) pivotally mounted on supports (21), and suspended by cables (28). Studs 34 are actuated independent of each other by fluid pressure means including a piston 35, Fig. 5, or by a nut and screw 52, 53, which move a bevel member 48, Fig. 6. A ring 45 and an additional stud 46, Fig. 6, may be provided for gripping tubes having large internal diameters. |
