<p>A detergent and/or disinfectant composition containing one or more organic quaternary ammonium salts is claimed. Preferably the organic quaternary salts are didecyl methyl polyoxyethyl ammonium lactate and/or propionate. The compositions may additionally contain (A) at least one agent to enhance the disinfectant activity, especially biguanide and/or guanidium acetate; (B) surfactants; (C) chelating and/or sequestering agents; and (D) alkalising agents or acidifiers. Two formulations are claimed, containing (by weight) (1) 5-20 % didecyl methyl polyoxyethyl ammonium propionate, 1-10 % biguanide, 1-20 % nonionic surfactant, 5-30 % EDTA, 1-10 % amine oxide and excipients q.s.p. 100 %; and (2) 5-20 % didecyl methyl polyoxyethyl ammonium propionate, 1-10 % guanidium acetate, 1-20 % NaOH, 1-20 % nonionic surfactant, 1- 30 % EDTA and excipients q.s.p. 100 %.
