A battery charger has a housing 2 containing a converting means for supplying a DC output via a connector 11 for charging a battery, the converting means being selectively operable from a DC input supply or from an AC input supply. An adapter unit 6 is pivotally mounted on the housing 2 and has contacts 7 for connection to the cigarette lighter socket on an automobile to provide a DC input to the converting means. A mains AC input may be provided to the converting means from a wall socket via contacts 9 on an adapter 8 which is also pivotally mounted on the housing 2. The contacts 9 may alternatively be slidably mounted, or the converting means may be connected to a mains AC wall socket via a power cord. The output connector 11 may be connected to a data port or a charge port of a mobile telephone. The converting means may have a DC/DC switch mode converter (18, Fig.2,3) connected to the DC input contacts 7 and giving a current limited, regulated output voltage. The AC input contacts 9 may be connected to an AC/DC converter (20, Figs.2,4), in the form of a rectifier (D4) feeding a DC/DC converter having two cascaded flyback stages. When charging the battery from the AC supply, the output of the AC/DC converter (20) may be connected to the input of the DC/DC converter (18). Alternatively, the outputs of the DC/DC and AC/DC converters may be connected in parallel to the output connector 11 (Fig.5).
|
