PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a raw material for optical materials, coatings, reactive diluents and surfactants, an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, etc., accompanying little side reaction in high yield by reacting an α-(hydroxymethyl)acrylic acid alkyl ester with an alcohol in the presence of a t-amine. SOLUTION: The objective compound of formula II is produced by reacting a compound of formula I (R<1> is a 1-18C alkyl, a 3-12C perhalogenoalkyl, etc.) [e.g. ethyl α-(hydroxymethyl)acrylate] with a compound of the formula R<2> -OH (R<2> is a 1-18C alkyl, a 3-1,2C perhalogenoalkyl, etc.) (e.g. methyl alcohol) at a molar ratio of 2/1 to 1/50 in the presence of 1-100mol% (based on the compound of the formula I) of a t-amine (e.g. triethylenediamine) at 30-150 deg.C. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor (e.g. p-methoxyphenol) since both of the compound of the formula I and the produced compound of the formula II are easily polymerizable. |
