[Also in Division C3] Coating compositions curable on heating comprise a dispersion in a plasticiser of a pvc. resin, a mixture of crosslinkable epoxy and phenolic resins and at least one methylene donor as a hardener for the crosslinkable resins. The pvc. resin is a plastisol or organosoil of a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer. The plasticiser is a phthalate diester, phosphonate, phosphate, polyalkylene glycol adipate or azelate condensates, aromatic petroleum, oil or liquid chlorinated paraffin; a volatile hydrocarbon, ketone, alcohol or ether diluent may also be present. Specified hardeners are hexamethylene tetramine, paraformaldehyde, sym. trioxane and anhydroformaldehydeaniline. The compositions preferably contain 2-20% epoxy resin, 1-15% phenolic resin and 0.5-3% hardener. Optional additives are stabilisers, e.g. calcium, cadmium or lead soaps, barium or lead oxides, lead silicate or hydrous tribasic lead sulphate, fillers, e.g. calcium oxide or carbonate, or silica and pigments e.g. carbon black, titanium dioxide or dyes. Coatings on substrates, e.g. metals, are cured by heating to 275-400‹F. Plastisols may be applied by a heat fusion process (Example II) and organosols by spraying (Example III).</p> |
