In an arrangement for mounting an elevator machine in a building, a mounting beam is fixed to the building structure, either at the top of the elevator shaft, or within a machine room above the elevator shaft. The elevator machine is mounted below, and suspended from, the mounting beam in such a manner that the centre of gravity of the machine, and the centroid of application of the rope forces to the traction sheave of the machine, are located at or near the neutral axis of the beam.
