PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent misdischarge between adjacent maintaining electrode pairs by making a maintaining discharge pulse frequency a frequency for a stable memory operating area. SOLUTION: When an inter-electrode gap and its adjacent inter-electrode gap are made to relatively approach each other, a difference of their min. maintaining voltages Vsm becomes nil, and not only the inter-electrode gap but also the adjacent inter-electrode gap become easily dischargeable. However, when a delay time of discharge in the inter-electrode gap is shortened by shortening an inactive period, discharge of the adjacent inter-electrode gap is suppressed. In order to stably discharge only in the gap by shortening a discharge delay of a maintaining pulse, a maintaining frequency is settled more than a fixed frequency. The discharge is generated in an area adjacent to the inter-electrode gap on maintaining electrodes, and is then spread outwardly, lasting until a wall charge on the maintaining electrode is throughly inverted during the time when the pulse is applied, and when no voltage is impressed or the wall charge are throughly inverted, the discharge is finished. |
