A vehicle for negotiating difficult terrain has a steering device 4 which comprises support means mounted on the vehicle chassis 1 for rotation about a longitudinal axis 5 and a plurality of carrier elements through which steering forces are transmitted from the support means to the ground, each carrier element having a circular section and being mounted to rotate a respective axis transverse to the axis 5. In the loader vehicle shown, a hub rotated about the axis 5 under the control of a steering wheel 10 has radial arms carrying a polygonal support frame 6 on each side of which a carrier wheel 8 is freely rotatable. In Fig. 4 (not shown), a circular support frame with rollers mounted thereon replaces the frame 6 and wheels 8. In Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), radial support arms connected to a shaft rotatable about the longitudinal axis 5 carry pairs of rollers supporting a flexible toric tyre rotatable about its circumferential axis. In Fig. 7 (not shown), an endless-track having a groundengaging roller rotatably mounted on each link is entrained around respective support means rotatable about two laterally spaced longitudinal axes. In Fig. 8 (not shown), two laterally-spaced steering devices are mounted one at each end of a transverse beam pivotally connected at its centre to the vehicle chassis. In Fig. 9 (not shown), two transversely spaced steering devices support one end of the vehicle and a single ground-wheel supports the other end.</p> |
