[Also in Division H1] The description is substantially the same as that disclosed in Specification 1,158,923, but the claims are directed to a method of manufacturing, for use in a cathodoluminescent, or electroluminescent device for instance (which may include p-n recombination radiation junctions), a layer of grains, e.g. of semi-conducting material, held together by a binder, in which a liquid adhesive layer is provided on a support, grains are sunk into the adhesive over part of their diameter, the binder is provided between the grains and hardened, and the adhesive layer is selectively dissolved to release the layer of grains and binder from the support. Reference is made to liquid, viscous, and hardenable adhesives (e.g. hardenable by polymerization, polycondensation or evaporation of a solvent). The adhesive layer may be readily volatilizable or water soluble for easy removal and may be a gel e.g. a polysaccharide having a high molecular weight in water e.g. starch or gum arabic, an aqueous solution of saccharose and glucose or alternatively gelatin attached to a nitrocellulose layer for example or a saccharose and/or glucose layer in combination with a lecithin layer or polystyrene or polymethylmethacrylate soluble in aromatics such as benzene and toluene in combination with an epoxy resin layer as a binder, resistant to aromatic solvents. Two oppositely located supports may each be provided with an adhesive layer.
