A portable hair drier comprises a plastic casing containing a fan 32 driven by an electric motor 36, an electric heating element 20, and a hose 21, the hose being axially expandable so that it may be extended beyond a removable cover member 12 and out of the casing for connection to a hair drier hood. The casing also includes an air inlet grill 35, a heat reflecting shield 52 surrounding the heating element, and a control knob 80, and the casing may be opened longitudinally into halves for servicing. The heating element is in two parts (54, 55, Figure 10, not shown) of unequal heating power and the control knob can be used to select either of these parts, or both of the parts in series, to provide the heating. Alternatively, cold air can be provided using the fan alone. A safety switch 79, 96 is operated through a sliding bar 97 by the inner end 98 of the hose so that the electrical circuit is broken when the hose is contained within the casing. A bi-metallic switch is provided to prevent the drier overheating. |
