PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image input device that easily and precisely recognizes a direction of an original with a simple configuration and provides an output of image data in a proper direction. SOLUTION: A feature amount of a segmented character image in a 3×3 dictionary size is extracted and the image is divided into feature amount data depending on a direction of the character and feature amount number information independently of a direction of the character. A dictionary data generating circuit 560 selects a recognition candidate character based on the feature amount number information and provides an output of dictionary data in the 3×3 dictionary size to a comparator circuit 580. The comparator circuit 580 rotates dictionary data by 90 deg. each and compares the rotated data with the feature amount data and gives information of a rotary angle with a highest coincidence degree to a CPU 51 as coincidence degree information. When the coincidence degree information exceeds prescribed threshold level, the image data at the rotating angle are rotated. When the coincidence degree information is less than a prescribed threshold level, the CPU 501 extracts feature amount data with resolution in a 3×3 dictionary size and compares the extracted feature amount data with the dictionary data of the same resolution.
