The device incorporates a locking ratchet (4) with lock surface (4a) and actuating section (4b). When the backrest is in locked position, the section is located next to a counter surface (6b) on the seat. It is formed to permit a pivot movement of a flange section (5) of a lock fitting on the backrest, when the ratchet is moved out of locking position. After the release movement of the ratchet, a locking section next to the actuating section engages on a counter locking section of a flange section (6) on a lock fitting on the seat, and fixes the ratchet in spring-loaded locking position.
