<p>Each of the tracks of each disc in a plurality of disc drives is divided into blocks and spare sectors are provided between the blocks at predetermined intervals. Blocks including defective sectors are rearranged in a substitute region designated in accordance with a defect list in which the addresses of the detected defective sectors are registered and the preset correspondence relations in such a way that the sectors except the defective sectors are continuous on the disc. When the rearranged data are reproduced, all the data within a range designated to be read are consecutively read out and stored in a memory. When data are read out of the memory, the data of the defective sectors are excluded. When data are recorded, the data are consecutively recorded in a range designated to be written and dummy data are written in the defective sectors. Thus, the defects can be coped with while all the disc drives are not stopped and, further, the operating speed is not lowered after the defects are excluded.</p> |
