A two-step process for the polymerization of lactide to polylactide, in which process in the first step polymerization is carried out to a conversion of at least 50 % by weight, and in the latter step the polylactide is polymerized further to a high conversion in conditions in which the mixing of the melt and the evaporation of the lactide are avoided.
