A process for producing 3-nitro-o-toluic acid which comprises oxidizing 3-nitro-o-xylene with oxygen or an oxygenic gas in a solvent based on a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst and a reaction accelerator. This process can provide 3-nitro-o-toluic acid highly selectively.
