An airbag inflator (10) has a casing (84) with a vent (90) to the airbag, and a piston (26) received in the casing (84). The piston (26) has a head (24) which forms a liquid propellent reservoir (32) and combustion chamber (30). Injection ports (52) are located in the piston head (24). A seal ring (50) blocks the injection ports (52). When ignited, the seal ring (50) is driven forward to unblock the injection ports (52) and allow the liquid propellent (32) into the combustion chamber (30) where it generates combustion gases to inflate the airbag (104).
