Trioxane is made by heating a concentrated aqueous solution of CH2O with a strongly acid catalyst, continuously distilling the trioxane as an aqueous azeotrope, extracting it with benzene from the distillate and distilling the extract. In examples, the trioxane thus obtained contained less than the following amounts of impurities: 5 p.p.m. formic acid, 10 p.p.m. CH2O, 30 p.p.m. water, 10 p.p.m. other. |
