Linear siloxane polymers containing units are prepared by contacting a cyclic compound of general formula where x = 3 to 6 and R may be either (i) monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, or (ii) -CH2CH2R1 where R is a monovalent perfluoroalkyl radical, with a catalytic amount of an alkyl lithium compound (e.g. n-butyl lithium or tert-butyl lithium). The process may be used for the preparation of homopolymers or copolymers. The copolymers may consist of units obtained from two or more compounds or by mixtures of such compounds with other cyclic organo-polysiloxanes.
