A tappet (1) for a valve gear of an internal combustion engine is switchably designed for different valve lifts, comprising an outer, circular segment (5) surrounding a circular segment (6). Both sections (5,6) are impinged upon by cams for different lifts and can be interconnected optionally via a coupling agent (9). According to the invention, a blow-by (12) for hydraulic fluid should be positioned in the skirt (2), leading out of an inlet hole (13) in the cylinder head (4), at the lowest point of the tappet (1) when seen from the direction of gravity in order to fit the tappet (1) as obliquely as possible. An orifice of the channel (27) following the blow-by (12) is also positioned in the highest segment of the tappet when seen from the direction of gravity. A reservoir (17) can therefore only empty up to the level of the orifice (21) after the internal combustion engine has been switched off, and as a result the tappet is adequately filled with hydraulic fluid when the internal combustion engine is refired.
