The operating device includes a coupling device (10) consisting of a coupling element (14), able to move radially, in the camshaft (8) and able to be pushed into a coupling recess in the switching cam (6) to be coupled firmly to the camshaft. The camshaft has a longitudinal boring (16) in which a switching shaft (12) is fitted so that it can turn between two switch positions. The coupling element rests on radially structured switching surface (21) of the switching shaft so that it is coupled in one position of the switching shaft, and uncoupled in the other.
