A portion of a shoe upper e.g. a vamp or counter, is stiffened by applying a coating L of thermoplastic material to the shoe upper W, the thermoplastic material being applied in a molten condition and being such that without penetrating substantially into the upper it forms, on cooling, a stiffly resilient coating at least lightly adherent to the upper. The coating can be softened e.g. by steam, before the upper is lasted so that the coating is moulded to the shape of the last during lasting. Suitable thermoplastic materials are polyesters, polyamides, polyester amides and polyvinyl compounds such as polystyrenes or polyvinyl acetate, having a softening point of from 200‹F. to 400‹F. The thermoplastic material is applied to the shoe upper by an applicator of the type described in Specification 1,096,792 so that the coating L has a tapered feather edge E. The coating may extend over part of the lasting margin, this portion being used to bond the lasting margin to the insole of the shoe.</p> |
