The device has a microwave radar system with at least one transmitter-receiver unit (SE) for generating, emitting and receiving microwaves, at least one hollow conductor arrangement (HL) between the transmitter-receiver unit and the blades and an evaluation unit for the evaluation of signals from the transmitter-receiver unit. The hollow conductor arrangement has at least one section along its edge remote from the transmitter-receiver unit along a line in a plane contg. the blade wheel rotation axis at a small distance from the enclosing surface of the vol. swept by the blade wheel as it rotates. The evaluation unit derives the radial and axial gap between the blade wheel and housing from the signals received from the transmitter-receiver unit or signals blade damage if present.
