The solenoid valve assembly comprises a spindle with a central opening and a movable valve element in the opening, an electric coil surrounding the central opening. A fluid fitting is provided at one end of the opening and a mounting boss at the other end of the opening. A valve orifice in the spindle is adapted to register with the valve element when the coil is deenergised. The valve element and the valve orifice provide controlled fluid flow through the central opening. Sealant material surrounds the spindle. Encapsulation encloses the spindle and compresses the sealant material against the spindle, hermetically sealing the coil. The sealant is a silicone material and the encapsulation is a moulded nylon enclosure for the spindle and the windings. The valve assembly comprises a pair of terminal extensions carried by the spindle, the coil having ends connected to the terminal extensions. Terminal sealant material is located at each of the terminal extensions, the encapsulation enclosing the terminal sealant material and compressing it into sealing engagement with the spindle.
