The method is used to determine the time remaining of an oil change interval of a combustion engine. The oil temperature and the fuel consumption of the engine are detected. The temperatures are evaluated using predetermined deterioration factors (A). The fuel consumption is evaluated wherein over predetermined time intervals, the sum of detected fuel consumptions is formed and multiplied with the deterioration factor (A) of the current oil temperature. The sum of the evaluated fuel consumptions is formed. The remaining part of the oil change interval is then determined as a function of the difference between a predetermined fuel consumption maximum value and the sum of the evaluated fuel consumption.
