[Also in Division D1] Ropes are made by compacting a bundle(s) of filaments in a first die, applying a reduced atmospheric pressure to the compacted filament bundle(s) in a second die and then extrusion coating the compacted bundle with a thermoplastic sheath. The bundle can be maintained in compacted form during the process by binding with adhesive or non-adhesive tape, twine or wire. The second die may be the compression die of an extrusion coating machine with a vacuum pump producing a pressure of 125 cm. Hg being connected to the die at the centre thereof. The extruded product can be cooled in a water bath or jet. The filaments can be made of polyethylene terephthalate, isotactic polypropylene, blends of branched polyethylene and polypropylene, nylon 6 or 6,6 glass, regenerated cellulose or blends of branched polyethylene and polypropylene or blends of polypropylene and elastomeric olefine copolymers or mixtures thereof. The filaments can have a circular or non-circular cross-section. The sheath can be composed of branched or linear polyethylene or blends thereof, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, terephthalate, polyhexamethylene adipamide, or steroregular polypropylene. The sheath may also contain lightabsorbers, antioxidants and organo-tin compounds. The sheath can be 0À8-7 mm. thick. The sheath can be as two coatings of different colour so that wear of the rope can be detected. The rope can be formed to have a neutral buoyancy.
