A high-voltage D.C. generator for one or more linear accelerators associated with a cyclotron as described in the parent Specification comprises a rotor stack of annular magnet sections 4, Figs. 2 and 3, having outwardly projecting polepieces 5 mounted on an insulating shaft (not shown), with intervening non-magnetic torque transmitting discs, Fig. 4, and insulating synthetic resinous material (not shown), and a stack of corresponding stator sections 16, Fig. 1, having inwardly projecting projections 17 each wound with a coil 18. Each coil is connected to a rectifier 26 and a smoothing capacitor 27. The voltages across the capacitors 27 are summed in series around each stator section 16 and summed in series throughout the length of the stator. Linear accelerator tubes are shown at 33. The rotor magnet sections are permanent magnetic, but it is stated that the rotor may alternatively be electromagnetically excited. The number of projections on each stator section preferably equals the number of polepieces on each rotor magnet section, but there may be two more projections 17 than polepieces 5 so that the alternating currents induced in the coils 18 are out of phase and ripple in the output direct current is reduced. The stator sections are connected together by non-magnetic torque resisting annuli of form similar to that shown in Fig. 4. In both the rotor and the stator the various sections, intervening discs and tie rods are embedded in epoxy resin. On the rotor the outer surface of the resin is smoothly cylindrical but has axial corrugations to impede surface tracking. The housing of the generator is filled with sulphur hexafluoride at high pressure.
