LIGHT-WEIGHT REFRACTORY AND ITS PRODUCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-weight refractory having high toughness in spite of extremely low bulk density and extremely light weight and provide its production process. SOLUTION: This light-weight refractory is produced by adjusting the pH of a dispersion liquid containing dispersed inorganic fiber and boron nitride powder, forming the aggregate of the inorganic fiber containing the boron nitride powder captured in the aggregate, drying the formed aggregate in vacuum and baking the product. The refractory contains essentially amorphous silica fiber as the main inorganic fiber, one or more kinds of fibers selected from alumna fiber, aluminosilicate fiber and aluminoborosilicate fiber as reinforcing inorganic fibers and one or more compounds selected from borosilicate and alumina borosilicate as a binder for bonding the fibers. It has a bulk density of <=0.12g/cm<3> and a tensile strength of >=2.5kgf/cm<2> in the direction of height.
