PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating material which can give a reefing metallic coating film having high metallicity and high brilliance and is improved in storage stability and interlaminar adhesion by using a metallic pigment prepared by coating the surfaces of aluminum flakes with an alkyl phosphate. SOLUTION: This material is an organic-solvent-based one mainly consisting of a metallic pigment prepared by treating the surfaces of aluminum flakes with a 10-18C alkyl phosphate and a vehicle component. The vehicle component comprises a resin having crosslinking functional groups such as isocyanato group and alkoxysilane groups, such as a polyester resin or an alkyd resin and a crosslinking agent. The aluminum flakes has desirably a mean particle diameter of 5-50μm. The metallic pigment is obtained by adding 2-10 pts.wt. alkyl phosphate to 100 pts.wt. aluminum flakes during the step of grinding aluminum flakes or the step of pasting the ground flakes with an organic solvent.
