Disclosed is a detergent composition comprising at least about 1% by weight, pre ferably at least about 3% of a polyhydroxy fatty acid amide surfactant of formula (I) wherein R1 is H. C1-C hyd rocarbyl hydrocarbyl,2-hydroxyethyl, or 2-hydroxy propyl,R2 is C7-C31 hydrocarbyl, and Z is polyhydroxyhydrocarbyl having a linear hydrocarb yl chain with at least three hydroxyls directly connected to the chain, or alkoxylated derivatives thereof; and at leas t about 1% by weight, preferably at least about 3 %, of an alkyl ester sulfonate surfactant of formula (II) wherein R3 is C8-C20 h ydrocarbyl, R4 is C1-C6 hydrocarbyl and M is a soluble salt-forming cation.
