PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the new composition having good durability, giving a lus trous color tone and used for the oxidative dyeing of keratin fibers by adding a specific oxidation base to the combination of a specific modifying agent, a specific cationic direct dye and a specific oxidizing agent in a medium. SOLUTION: This composition comprises (A) an oxidation base selected from a p-phenylenediamine, a bis(phenyl)alkylenediamine and their acid adducts, (B) a modifying agent selected from meta-diphenol compounds and their salt adduct, (C) a cationic direct dye selected from (1) compounds of formulas I and II [R1 is H, an alkoxy, etc.; R2 is a heterocyclic group, etc.; R3 is H, etc.; R4 , R5 are each H, an alkyl; P1 , P2 are each N, etc.; (m) 0, 1; X<-> is chloride ion, etc.; A is a group of formula III (R' is an alkyl), etc.], and (2) a compound of formula IV [R6 is an alkyl, etc.; R7 is a heterocyclic group; R8 , R9 are each an alkyl, etc.; X<-> is chloride ion, etc.; B is a group of formula V (R10 is an alkyl, etc.)], and (D) an oxidizing agent.
