PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymerization initiator composition being useful in various fields such as acrylic glass components and moldings, not suffering from interruption by oxygen and permitting the rapid polymerization and crosslinking of an unsaturated monomer at low temperatures by combining a mixture of a group II metal salt with a group VII or VIII metal salt or an organic solution thereof with an organic peroxy ester or an organic solution thereof. SOLUTION: The group II metal salt as the first essential component is exemplified by a salt of zinc, cadmium or mercury and is desirably a zinc carboxylate. The group VII or VIII metal salt is exemplified by a salt of cobalt, manganese, nickel or palladium and is desirably a cobalt or manganese carboxylate. If necessary, these metal salts are used in the form of organic solvent solutions, and the solvents are desirably aromatic solvents orα,β-unsaturated esters. The second essential component is suitably a liquid peroxy ester of a linear or branched aliphatic peroxycarboxylic acid or a cycloaliphatic or aromatic peroxycarboxylic acid with a tert. alcohol.
