PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of easily and exactly controlling the dry film thicknesses of coating films even in sections, such as interion finish parts of ships, where coating is extremely difficult. SOLUTION: This method for forming the coating films comprises forming the coating films having the target dry film thickness of >=100μm nearly uniformly on a material to be coated. A coating material of 0.01 to 3vol.% in the content of coloring pigments to the solid content of the coating material is used as a coating material for deciding the film thicknesses. In addition, the content of the coloring pigments in the coating material for deciding the film thicknesses is so adjusted as to satisfy the following requirements: The color difference between the coating material for deciding the film thicknesses and the material to be coated be >=20; the color difference between the coating film of the target dry film thickness and the coating film of the dry film thickness below (the target dry film thickness - 50)μm be >=2 and the color difference between the coating film of the target dry film thickness and the coating film of the dry film thickness over (the target dry film thickness + 50)μm be below 1.
