Crude ethanol obtained by the hydration of ethylene is refined by treating an aqueous solution of the crude ethanol containing not more than 60% by wt. ethanol with an amount of hypochlorite of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in excess of the amount necessary to react with the inpurities in the crude ethanol. The hypochlorite treatment is effected under alkaline conditions at a temperature below 60‹ C. and the excess hypochlorite is decomposed with a non-volatile reducing agent.
